Unlocking Insights: RFI Foundation Adds Four Years of Data to the Open-Access Financed Emissions Database

The RFI Foundation is pleased to announce the expansion of its Financed Emissions Database, which now offers five years from 2017 to 2021. This expansion marks a significant milestone in providing comprehensive insights into the climate impact of financial institutions across 11 OIC countries over this period.

In the lead up to COP 28 in Dubai, global attention is steadfastly focused on climate action, where financial institutions must play a pivotal role in shaping a sustainable economic future. The enhanced Financed Emissions Database facilitates a nuanced exploration of greenhouse gas emissions indicators derived from financial institutions' portfolios. The covered countries include the six GCC nations, Malaysia, Indonesia, Türkiye, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.

The RFI Foundation’s data extension offers finance sector stakeholders with open access to deeper and more dynamic understanding of the evolving landscape of financed emissions in 11 OIC markets as well as across the bulk of the Islamic finance sector. The five-year span of data enables a nuanced analysis of trends and a comprehensive assessment of the impact of financial decisions over time.

As the RFI Foundation advances collaboration with OIC market banks, the data provides the foundation for translating a better understanding of their portfolio’s climate risk into meaningful action to support the climate transition.  RFI Foundation’s data can empower them to assess the trajectory of these risks in light of portfolio changes and interlinkages. This data provides a tool to assist banks setting and taking action on forward-looking targets that support whole-economy decarbonization to provide for a more sustainable future.

Blake Goud, the CEO of RFI Foundation stated: “The RFI Foundation remains committed to advancing responsible finance and equipping financial institutions in Islamic markets with essential tools. The expanded Financed Emissions Database provides data to help form a deeper understanding of the role that finance & investment play in economy-wide emissions risk.  In order to expand accessibility of the database among OIC finance sector stakeholders, we have also published a version of the companion Financed Emissions Database Report in Arabic.”
